Microsoft Windows

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

The 0x0000006B blue screen means Windows failed to start its very first process during boot. This is a startup-phase crash — Windows cannot get off the ground. It is almost always caused by corrupted or missing Windows system files.

Affected Models

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 7

Common Causes

  • Critical Windows system files are missing or corrupted
  • A Windows update was interrupted and left the system in a broken state
  • The Windows registry has been damaged by a crash or improper shutdown
  • A virus or malware deleted or replaced core Windows files
  • A hard drive failure corrupted files needed for Windows to start

How to Fix It

  1. Boot from Windows installation media (USB or DVD). Insert the media and restart. When prompted, choose 'Repair your computer' — do NOT choose Install.

You can create Windows installation media for free using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool on another PC.

  2. In the recovery menu, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair. Let Windows attempt to fix the boot problem automatically.

Startup Repair takes 5–15 minutes. It replaces missing startup files and repairs boot records.

  3. If Startup Repair does not help, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt and run: sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

This version of System File Checker works even when Windows cannot start normally. Replace C: with your Windows drive letter if different.

  4. Try restoring Windows to a point before the error started. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore and pick a restore point from before the problem began.

System Restore does not affect your personal files — it only undoes system changes.

  5. As a last resort, perform a Reset from the recovery menu. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset This PC > Keep My Files to reinstall Windows while keeping your personal data.

This will remove all installed apps and settings but should preserve documents, photos, and other personal files.

When to Call a Professional

If all recovery options fail and you cannot boot into Windows, a technician can perform a repair install. This reinstalls Windows without deleting your personal files. If the hard drive is failing, a technician can also recover data before replacing the drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix this without a Windows USB drive?

It is very difficult to fix this error without boot media. If Windows cannot start at all, you need something external to boot from. You can create a free Windows installation USB on another PC using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.

Will I lose my files?

Startup Repair and System File Checker should not delete your files. System Restore also preserves personal files. Only a full reinstall or Reset risks your files — and even 'Reset > Keep My Files' tries to preserve them. Always back up if you can access the drive from another PC.

Could a virus cause this error?

Yes — malware that targets system files can cause this crash. After fixing the boot problem, run a full antivirus scan. Microsoft Defender Offline Scan is a good option — it scans before Windows fully loads, catching malware that hides during normal operation.
