025

Roku Streaming Device

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Roku error code 025 means your Roku device cannot connect to your wireless network. Either the Wi-Fi password was entered incorrectly, the signal is too weak, or there is a problem with your router. This is one of the most common Roku connection errors and is almost always fixable at home.

Affected Models

  • Roku Express
  • Roku Streaming Stick
  • Roku Ultra
  • Roku Premiere
  • Roku TV

Common Causes

  • The Wi-Fi password was entered incorrectly
  • The Wi-Fi signal is too weak where the Roku is located
  • The router has stopped broadcasting normally and needs a restart
  • The Roku's IP address has a conflict with another device on the network
  • The network requires a browser login page (captive portal) that Roku cannot complete

How to Fix It

  1. Re-enter your Wi-Fi password carefully. Go to Settings > Network > Set up connection on your Roku, select your network, and type the password again. Passwords are case-sensitive.

A mistyped password is by far the most common cause of error 025. Use the Show Password option to verify every character before connecting.

  2. Restart your router. Unplug it from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 1–2 minutes for it to fully restart before trying to connect the Roku again.

Routers can develop stuck connections that block new devices. A restart clears them. This is always worth trying early in troubleshooting.

  3. Move your Roku or router closer together to improve Wi-Fi signal strength. Walls, floors, and appliances all weaken Wi-Fi. The Roku needs at least two signal bars to connect reliably.

A Wi-Fi extender or mesh network node placed closer to the TV can permanently fix weak signal issues.

  4. On your Roku, go to Settings > Network > Check connection to see your current signal strength. If it shows 'Poor' or 'Fair', signal strength is the problem.

Roku needs a 'Good' or 'Excellent' signal for stable streaming. A poor signal causes connections to drop and prevents initial setup.

  5. Restart your Roku. Go to Settings > System > System restart. Or unplug the Roku from power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.

A Roku restart clears its network cache and resets its connection attempt. This resolves many temporary connection glitches.

When to Call a Professional

Frequently Asked Questions

My Roku was working fine. Why is it showing 025 now?

Three things commonly cause a Roku to suddenly lose connection. First, your Wi-Fi password may have been changed. Second, your router may have been reset to factory settings. Third, your router may have assigned a new IP address that conflicts. Re-entering your network settings usually fixes all three.

My Roku is right next to the router. Why is the signal weak?

Being too close to a router can actually cause issues with some devices. Most home routers also have 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. 5 GHz has a shorter range but faster speeds. 2.4 GHz reaches further. Try connecting to the 2.4 GHz version of your Wi-Fi (usually has '2.4G' in the name) for a more stable connection.

Can I use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi?

Yes — Roku Ultra and some other Roku models have an Ethernet port. A wired connection is always more stable than Wi-Fi. If your Roku has an Ethernet port and you have a cable you can run, using a wired connection permanently eliminates Wi-Fi errors.
