E2

HP Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The E2 error means your HP printer has an ink cartridge problem. The printer cannot detect one or more cartridges, or a cartridge is not working properly. This is usually fixed by reseating or replacing the cartridge.

Affected Models

  • HP DeskJet 2700 Series
  • HP DeskJet 4100 Series
  • HP ENVY 6000 Series
  • HP ENVY Inspire 7000 Series
  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 Series

Common Causes

  • An ink cartridge is not seated correctly in its slot
  • The copper contacts on the cartridge are dirty or smudged
  • A cartridge is empty or has dried out from lack of use
  • You installed an incompatible or counterfeit cartridge
  • The cartridge contacts inside the printer are dirty

How to Fix It

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center.

Do not force the carriage to move. Let the printer position it automatically.

  2. Remove the cartridge that is causing the problem. Press down on it and slide it out of the slot.

If you are not sure which cartridge is the problem, remove and reseat all of them one at a time.

  3. Check the copper-colored contacts on the bottom of the cartridge. Wipe them gently with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Do not touch the contacts with your fingers. Skin oils can interfere with the electrical connection.

  4. Slide the cartridge back into its slot firmly until it clicks into place.

Make sure the cartridge is in the correct slot. Color cartridges and black cartridges have different slots.

  5. Close the access door and wait for the printer to recognize the cartridge. Try printing a test page.

If the error persists, try installing a brand-new genuine HP cartridge.

When to Call a Professional

Most E2 errors are fixable at home by reseating or replacing cartridges. If the error persists after trying new genuine HP cartridges, the cartridge carriage or electrical contacts inside the printer may be damaged. A repair typically costs $70 to $150 depending on the model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use non-HP ink cartridges in my HP printer?

Third-party cartridges can sometimes trigger the E2 error. HP printers are designed to work best with genuine HP cartridges. If you use a third-party cartridge and get E2, try replacing it with an original HP cartridge to see if that fixes it.

Why does my HP printer say E2 right after I installed a new cartridge?

The cartridge may not be fully seated in the slot. Remove it and reinsert it firmly until you hear a click. Also make sure you removed the protective tape covering the contacts and ink nozzles.

How do I know if my ink cartridge is empty or just not detected?

If the cartridge is genuinely empty, you will usually see a low ink warning before the E2 error. If the cartridge is new or recently refilled, the issue is likely a connection problem. Try cleaning the contacts and reseating the cartridge first.
