06
HP Printer
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error 06 on an HP printer means a door or cover is open. The printer refuses to print as a safety measure. Close all covers firmly and the error should clear right away.
Affected Models
- HP LaserJet 1000 Series
- HP LaserJet 1200 Series
- HP LaserJet 1300 Series
- HP LaserJet 2100 Series
- HP LaserJet 3100 Series
Common Causes
- The top or front cover is not fully latched shut
- The toner cartridge door was recently opened and not closed properly
- Debris or a scrap of paper is stuck in the door frame and preventing full closure
- A broken or worn door latch is not triggering the closed sensor
- The door-open sensor inside the printer is dirty or malfunctioning
How to Fix It
-
Look at all doors and covers on the printer. Check the top cover, front cover, and rear access panel.
On multifunction printers, also check the scanner lid and ADF (automatic document feeder) cover.
-
Open each cover fully, then close it firmly until you hear or feel a click.
A half-latched door will trigger the sensor just as much as a fully open door.
-
Check the door frame for stuck paper or debris. Remove anything blocking the door from closing flush.
Even a small torn piece of paper can prevent the door from seating properly.
-
Remove the toner cartridge, close the door, then reopen it and reinstall the cartridge. Close the door again.
This resets the door sensor in many HP models.
-
Turn the printer off, wait 15 seconds, and turn it back on. The error should now be gone.
If the error returns immediately after startup, the door sensor itself may need to be replaced.
When to Call a Professional
If you have firmly closed all doors and the error still shows, the door sensor may be broken. This is a simple repair but requires opening the printer. A technician can replace the sensor for around $40 to $80.
Frequently Asked Questions
I closed all the doors but error 06 is still showing. What now?
Try pressing each door with a little extra force to make sure it is fully latched. If that does not work, check for debris in the door hinge area. If none of that helps, the door-open sensor may be faulty.
Can error 06 appear after changing the toner cartridge?
Yes, this is very common. The toner door sometimes does not close fully after a cartridge swap. Open the door completely, reseat the cartridge firmly, and close the door with a firm push. Make sure the cartridge tabs are fully seated in their tracks.
Will error 06 cause any damage to the printer?
No. It is simply a safety interlock. The printer will not print with a door open to protect you from the hot fuser and moving parts inside. Once the door is properly closed, normal printing resumes.
