E22
Canon Printer
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error E22 means a document is jammed in the Automatic Document Feeder, or ADF. The ADF is the slot at the top of all-in-one printers where you load documents for scanning or copying. Remove the jammed document from the ADF to clear this error.
Affected Models
- Canon PIXMA MX490 Series
- Canon PIXMA MX920 Series
- Canon PIXMA TR8500 Series
- Canon MAXIFY MB2700 Series
- Canon PIXMA G6000 Series
Common Causes
- The document pages are stapled together and the ADF cannot separate them
- The document is wrinkled, folded, or torn, causing it to catch in the feed mechanism
- Multiple pages stuck together (a multi-feed) caused a blockage in the ADF
- The document is too small, too large, or too thick for the ADF specifications
- A tiny piece of torn paper from a previous jam was left in the ADF and caught the new document
How to Fix It
-
Stop the current scan or copy job if it is still running. Then open the ADF cover — this is usually on the top of the printer.
Forcing paper out while the printer is actively trying to feed it can tear the document and leave scraps inside.
-
Gently remove any documents loaded in the ADF input tray. Then gently pull the jammed document out in the direction it was feeding.
Pull slowly with both hands. If the paper resists, open the ADF cover for better access and a different angle.
-
Open the ADF cover fully and inspect inside for any remaining scraps of paper. Remove them completely.
Even a tiny torn scrap left inside the ADF will jam the next document you try to scan.
-
Check your document before reloading. Remove any staples, straighten any folds or creases, and fan the pages to separate them.
Staples, paper clips, and sticky notes must be removed before placing documents in the ADF.
-
Reload the document and press the Resume button or restart the scan or copy job.
If the same document keeps jamming, try placing it on the flatbed glass instead of using the ADF.
When to Call a Professional
ADF jams are almost always fixable at home. If jams happen frequently with properly prepared documents, the ADF feed rollers may be worn. A technician can clean or replace ADF rollers for $50 to $90. Contact Canon support at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666) for warranty assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the ADF with stapled documents?
No. Stapled documents must never be placed in the ADF. The ADF feeds one sheet at a time — a staple will jam the mechanism and can damage the feed rollers. Always remove staples and paper clips before using the ADF.
What paper sizes can the Canon ADF handle?
Most Canon ADF units accept paper from 4 x 5.8 inches (A6) up to 8.5 x 14 inches (Legal). The ADF also has a maximum document weight — very heavy cardstock may not feed correctly. Check your Canon model's specifications for exact supported sizes and weights.
My document is not stapled but still jams in the ADF. Why?
Wrinkled, curled, or damp paper jams the ADF even without staples. Also check whether the page count exceeds your ADF's maximum load capacity. Try feeding just 5 to 10 pages at a time if you are loading a large stack.
