E03

Canon Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The E03 error means there is a paper jam inside your Canon printer. A sheet of paper is stuck somewhere in the paper path. You need to carefully remove the jammed paper before the printer will work again.

Affected Models

  • Canon PIXMA TS3500 Series
  • Canon PIXMA TR4700 Series
  • Canon PIXMA G3000 Series
  • Canon PIXMA MG3600 Series
  • Canon PIXMA TS5300 Series

Common Causes

  • A sheet of paper got crumpled or folded during printing
  • The paper tray was overfilled past the maximum load line
  • Foreign objects like paper clips, staples, or bits of torn paper are inside the printer
  • The paper feed rollers are dirty or worn, causing the paper to skew
  • Thick or specialty paper was used that the printer cannot handle

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the printer. Gently pull out any paper visible from the output tray on the front of the printer.

Pull the paper slowly and evenly to avoid tearing it. Torn paper left inside will cause another jam.

  2. Open the rear cover of the printer and look for paper stuck near the rollers. Gently pull it out.

Some Canon models have a removable rear panel that pops off for better access.

  3. Open the top cover and check around the ink cartridge area. Remove any visible paper or debris.

Be careful not to touch the ink cartridges or the print head while reaching inside.

  4. Check the paper tray and remove any wrinkled, torn, or damp sheets. Reload with fresh paper.

Fan the new stack of paper before loading to prevent sheets from sticking together.

  5. Close all covers, turn the printer back on, and press the Resume button to clear the error.

If the error persists, there may still be a small piece of paper hiding inside. Check all access points again.

When to Call a Professional

Paper jams are almost always fixable at home. If jams keep happening with normal paper, the feed rollers may need replacement. A Canon service center can do this for $40 to $80.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I cannot find the jammed paper?

Check all three access points: the output slot in front, the rear cover, and the top cover near the cartridges. Use a flashlight to look deep inside. If you truly cannot find paper but the error remains, a very small scrap may be stuck in the rollers.

Can I prevent paper jams in my Canon printer?

Yes. Use good quality paper and do not overfill the tray. Fan the paper stack before loading to separate the sheets. Run the roller cleaning function from the maintenance menu every few months.

Will pulling jammed paper out damage my printer?

Not if you do it gently. Always pull paper in the direction it was moving. Do not yank or twist the paper — this can damage the feed rollers. If the paper is stuck tight, it is better to call for service than to force it.
