U4

Universal HVAC System

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

HVAC error code U4 means the indoor unit and the outdoor unit have lost communication with each other. They cannot talk to each other through the signal wire. The unit shuts down until communication is restored.

Affected Models

  • Daikin mini-splits
  • Mitsubishi mini-splits
  • Fujitsu split systems
  • Multi-zone AC systems
  • Generic split systems

Common Causes

  • The communication wire between the indoor and outdoor unit is loose, broken, or disconnected
  • A power surge or lightning strike damaged the communication circuit on one of the control boards
  • The outdoor unit lost power while the indoor unit remained on
  • The communication wire was accidentally cut or damaged during maintenance or construction
  • One of the control boards (indoor or outdoor) has failed

How to Fix It

  1. Check that both the indoor and outdoor units are powered on. Make sure the circuit breaker for the outdoor unit has not tripped.

The most common cause of U4 is the outdoor unit losing power while the indoor unit is still on. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker.

  2. Turn off the system at the circuit breaker — make sure both indoor and outdoor units lose power. Wait 5 minutes, then restore power and restart the system.

A full power cycle to both units resets the communication protocol. This clears temporary communication errors caused by power fluctuations.

  3. Visually inspect the cable running between the indoor and outdoor units. Look for any obvious damage — crimped, cut, or pinched wires, especially near connection points.

Do not touch or handle the connecting wires yourself. Just look. If you see damage, report it to your HVAC technician.

  4. Check that the circuit breaker is fully reset. Flip the breaker completely OFF, wait 30 seconds, then flip it fully ON. A partially tripped breaker can cut power to the outdoor unit while leaving the indoor unit on.

This is a very common and easy fix. Many U4 errors are caused by nothing more than a tripped breaker.

  5. If the U4 error persists after resetting the breaker, call an HVAC technician. They will use diagnostic equipment to test communication wire continuity and check both control boards for damage.

A communication wire replacement is usually straightforward and affordable. A control board replacement is more expensive but still a common repair.

When to Call a Professional

A U4 error requires checking the wiring and control boards — work that should only be done by a licensed HVAC technician. They can test the communication wire for continuity and verify both control boards are functioning. Do not attempt to access internal wiring yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the indoor and outdoor units connected?

Mini-split systems have two types of connections between units. Refrigerant lines carry the refrigerant that does the cooling and heating. A communication cable (usually a thin 2 or 3-wire cable) carries electrical signals so the units can coordinate. U4 means that communication cable has an issue.

Can a power surge cause U4?

Yes — a power surge from lightning or grid switching can damage the communication circuit on one or both control boards. This is why it is recommended to install surge protectors on HVAC equipment. If U4 appeared right after a storm, a power surge is the likely cause and a board replacement may be needed.

Is U4 a serious error?

Yes — the unit will not run at all with U4 active because there is no communication between the two units. However, it is often caused by something simple like a tripped breaker. Always check the breaker first before calling a technician — you might save yourself a service call.
