SU-30625-6

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The SU-30625-6 error means your PlayStation cannot find or download a system software update. The console tried to check for an update but the search failed. This is usually caused by a temporary network issue or a problem reaching Sony's update servers.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro
  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Common Causes

  • Your internet connection dropped out or is too slow to reach Sony's update servers
  • Sony's update servers are temporarily down or under maintenance
  • A firewall or router setting is blocking access to Sony's update servers
  • The update file downloaded previously is corrupted and cannot be verified
  • There is not enough free storage space to download and stage the update

How to Fix It

  1. Check the PlayStation Network status page at status.playstation.com on your phone or computer. Look for any reported issues with system software updates.

If Sony's servers are down, there is nothing to do except wait for them to come back online.

  2. Restart your PlayStation and your router. Turn the console fully off, then unplug the router for 60 seconds. Plug the router back in, wait for it to reconnect, then turn the PlayStation on.

A fresh network connection clears temporary errors that can block the update check.

  3. Try updating via the internet again. Go to Settings > System Software Update and try again after your restart.

If the automatic check still fails, try the manual USB update method in the next step.

  4. Download the update manually to a USB drive. On a computer, go to PlayStation's support website and download the latest system software file. Copy it to a USB drive in a folder named PS4 > UPDATE (or PS5 > UPDATE for PS5).

The folder name must be in capital letters exactly as shown. The filename must also match exactly — check Sony's website for the correct filename.

  5. Insert the USB drive into your PlayStation. Go to Settings > System Software Update > Update from USB Storage Device and follow the on-screen steps.

This method bypasses the internet entirely and installs the update directly from the USB drive.

When to Call a Professional

This is a software and network issue that you can resolve at home. You do not need a repair technician. If you cannot install updates after trying all steps, contact PlayStation Support at 1-800-345-7669. They can walk you through a manual update process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to install the update? Can I skip it?

You can skip optional game updates, but system software updates are required to access PlayStation Network. Without the latest system software, you cannot sign into PSN, play online, or use the PlayStation Store. You can still play games offline on older system software.

The USB update method says the update file is invalid. What is wrong?

The most common causes are an incorrect folder name, incorrect filename, or a corrupted download. Double-check that the folder is named exactly PS4 > UPDATE and that the file matches the name listed on Sony's support page. Try downloading the file again — the first download may have been incomplete.

After the update installs, will my games and saves still be there?

Yes. System software updates do not delete your games, saves, or settings. They only update the console's operating system. Your content will be exactly as you left it after the update completes.
