CE-33986-9
Sony PlayStation
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The CE-33986-9 error means a game or application did not install completely on your PlayStation. The installation stopped before it could finish. This can happen with both disc-based games and digital downloads from the PlayStation Store.
Affected Models
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 4 Slim
- PlayStation 4 Pro
- PlayStation 5
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition
Common Causes
- The game download was interrupted before it finished — for example, the console lost internet mid-download
- The disc has scratches, smudges, or physical damage that prevented a full read
- There is not enough free storage space on the console's hard drive to finish installing
- The console's database has a corrupted entry from a previous failed install
- A power interruption or forced shutdown happened while the game was installing
How to Fix It
-
Delete the partial installation. Go to Settings > Storage > Applications, find the game, press Options, and select Delete.
The partial installation is what causes the error. Removing it fully clears the way for a clean reinstall.
-
Check your available storage space. Go to Settings > Storage and confirm you have enough free space. A good rule is to have at least 20% of your drive free.
Games often need extra temporary space during installation — sometimes double the final installed size.
-
Restart your PlayStation completely. Hold the power button until the console beeps twice and turns off. Wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
A full restart clears the system cache and can fix issues that a simple restart from the menu does not.
-
If installing from disc, clean the disc gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe from the center outward — never in circles. Then try reinstalling.
Fingerprints or smudges are one of the most common reasons a disc-based installation stops partway.
-
Rebuild the database in Safe Mode. Turn the console off completely. Hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear a second beep. Connect a controller with a USB cable and select Rebuild Database.
This repairs corrupted entries in the PlayStation's internal database. It does not delete your games or saves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting the partial install delete my save data?
No. Save data is stored separately from the game installation. Deleting the game only removes the game files, not your progress. Your saves will be waiting when you reinstall the game.
I downloaded the full game but I still get this error. Why?
The download progress bar can show 100% but the installation step may not have completed. Try deleting the game entry from Storage, not just Notifications. Then download and install it again from scratch.
Can a failing hard drive cause this error?
Yes. If your hard drive is failing or has bad sectors, installations can stop partway through. If rebuilding the database does not fix the problem and multiple games fail to install, your hard drive may need replacing. ContactPlayStation Support or a repair shop for further diagnosis.
