CE-30005-8

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The CE-30005-8 error means your PlayStation cannot read the disc you inserted. This happens when the disc is damaged, dirty, or the disc drive is having trouble. It can also occur with digital games if the hard drive has corrupted data.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro
  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Common Causes

  • The game disc is scratched, smudged, or has fingerprints on the data surface
  • The disc drive laser lens is dirty from dust buildup inside the console
  • The disc is warped or cracked and cannot be read properly by the drive
  • The game data installed on the hard drive has become corrupted
  • The disc drive hardware is failing or malfunctioning due to age or wear

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the disc from the console. Inspect it for scratches, fingerprints, or smudges on the shiny data side.

Hold the disc by the edges and look at the bottom surface under good lighting.

  2. Clean the disc by wiping from the center hole outward to the edge using a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not wipe in circles.

Wiping in circles can create scratches that follow the data tracks, making them harder to read.

  3. Try a different game disc in the same console. If the other disc works fine, the original disc is likely damaged.

If no discs work, the problem is with the console's disc drive rather than the disc itself.

  4. Rebuild the PlayStation database. Turn off the console, then hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear a second beep. Select 'Rebuild Database.'

This fixes corrupted data on the hard drive without deleting your games or saves. It may take an hour or more.

  5. If the error persists, delete the game data and reinstall it from the disc. Go to Settings > Storage, find the game, and delete it.

Your save data is stored separately and will not be deleted. The game will reinstall from the disc.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the disc and rebuilding the database do not fix the error, the disc drive may need repair. Disc drive replacement on a PS4 costs $80 to $150 including parts and labor. On a PS5, drive repairs are more expensive — typically $100 to $200. Make sure to use an authorized repair service to avoid voiding your warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a scratched disc be repaired?

Minor scratches can sometimes be buffed out using a disc repair kit or professional resurfacing service. Game stores and some electronics shops offer disc resurfacing for about $3 to $5. However, deep scratches that go through the data layer cannot be repaired.

Does this error affect digital games too?

The CE-30005-8 error primarily affects disc-based games. However, it can occasionally appear with digital games if the hard drive has corrupted data. For digital games, deleting and redownloading the game usually fixes the issue.

How do I know if my disc drive is failing?

If multiple different discs all trigger the CE-30005-8 error, the drive is likely the problem. You may also hear unusual grinding, clicking, or whirring sounds from the drive. A failing drive needs professional repair or replacement.
