2168-0001

Nintendo Nintendo Switch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 2168-0001 means your Nintendo Switch cannot read the game cartridge you inserted. The cartridge slot contacts may be dirty, or the cartridge itself may be damaged. This error only affects physical game cards — digital games are not affected.

Affected Models

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch OLED

Common Causes

  • The game cartridge's gold contact pins are dirty or tarnished
  • The cartridge slot inside the Switch has dust or debris on its contacts
  • The game cartridge has been physically damaged, bent, or cracked
  • The cartridge is not fully inserted into the slot
  • The Switch cartridge reader hardware has worn out or developed a fault

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the cartridge and inspect the gold contacts on the bottom. If they look dirty or tarnished, lightly clean them with a dry cotton swab or a cotton swab barely dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Let the contacts dry completely before reinserting the cartridge. Never use water.

  2. Blow gently into the cartridge slot to remove any loose dust. You can also use a can of compressed air held a few inches away for a brief burst.

Do not spray compressed air directly into the slot at close range — it can damage the delicate contact pins.

  3. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until you feel and hear it click into place. Try removing and reinserting it a few times to ensure good contact.

The cartridge must be inserted label-side facing out (toward you) on the Switch.

  4. Try a different game cartridge. If a second cartridge works, the original cartridge is damaged. If no cartridge works on your Switch, the cartridge reader itself has the problem.

Comparing results with another cartridge is the fastest way to identify whether the issue is the game or the console.

  5. Power the Switch off completely and restart it before reinserting the cartridge. Sometimes a system restart is needed after a read error before the reader will try again successfully.

Hold the Power button for 3 seconds and choose Power Off — not Sleep Mode.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the cartridge and slot does not resolve the error, the cartridge reader may need repair. Nintendo's official repair service is available at repair.nintendo.com. Nintendo Switch Lite users: the cartridge slot is the only way to play physical games, so repair is worth prioritizing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Switch Lite play the same game cartridges as a regular Switch?

Yes. The Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED all use the same game card format. Any cartridge that works on one model will work on all of them. The only exception is certain accessories designed for the TV-connected Switch that the Lite cannot use.

Is it safe to clean the cartridge with alcohol?

Yes, when done carefully. Use 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Only touch the gold contacts — avoid the sides of the cartridge. Allow it to dry completely (30 to 60 seconds) before inserting it again.

My cartridge works in another Switch but not mine. What does that mean?

If the same cartridge works on another console, the problem is your Switch's cartridge reader. Dust or debris on the reader's contacts is the most common cause. If cleaning does not help, Nintendo's repair service can replace the cartridge reader.
