P2119

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

P2119 means the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Throttle Body Range/Performance fault is present. The PCM commanded the throttle to a specific position, but the throttle plate did not reach that position. This typically means the throttle body is physically unable to move as commanded. Carbon buildup, a stuck throttle plate, or a failed throttle body motor are the most common causes. Symptoms include stalling, rough idle, erratic acceleration response, and possible limp mode.

Affected Models

  • Common in Ford F-150, F-250, and Expedition
  • Common in Ford Mustang and Ranger with electronic throttle
  • Seen in Lincoln Navigator and Mark LT
  • Also appears on some GM and Chrysler platforms with electronic throttle bodies

Common Causes

  • Heavy carbon buildup on the throttle plate causing it to stick or bind
  • Throttle body actuator motor worn out and unable to overcome resistance
  • Throttle return spring broken or missing, preventing the plate from returning to closed position
  • Damaged throttle body bore or blade — warped or scored preventing smooth movement
  • Damaged wiring or connector reducing power to the throttle actuator motor

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the air intake duct and inspect the throttle plate and bore for visible carbon buildup.

On vehicles over 60,000 miles, significant carbon deposits are common and are the first thing to address.

  2. Manually press the throttle plate open and release it. It should spring back firmly to the closed position.

If the plate moves stiffly or does not return crisply, cleaning or a replacement spring (if separate) may be needed.

  3. Clean the throttle plate and bore thoroughly with throttle body cleaner. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe away deposits.

Do not spray cleaner into the throttle body while the engine is running — spray it onto a cloth first.

  4. After cleaning, perform a throttle relearn procedure specific to your vehicle make.

Most vehicles require a relearn after throttle body service to recalibrate the PCM's position baseline.

  5. Replace the throttle body if cleaning does not resolve the issue or if the motor is making grinding or buzzing sounds.

A throttle body motor that makes noise under load is failing and will eventually strand you.

When to Call a Professional

Throttle body cleaning is $50 to $100 at a shop. Throttle body replacement is $100 to $300 in parts for most vehicles. Labor is typically 1 hour — total shop cost is $150 to $400. Always perform a throttle body relearn after replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my car stall when P2119 is present?

If the throttle plate is sticking in a partially open or closed position, the engine cannot control idle speed correctly. A stuck plate at idle can cause the engine to run too lean and stall. A plate stuck open causes a too-high idle RPM and difficulty returning to a normal idle.

How often should I clean the throttle body to prevent P2119?

Most manufacturers recommend throttle body cleaning every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you drive frequently in stop-and-go traffic or use non-Top Tier gasoline, more frequent cleaning is beneficial. Using Top Tier certified gasoline reduces carbon deposits in the entire intake system.

Will P2119 go away after cleaning the throttle body?

In most cases, yes — if carbon buildup was the cause. After cleaning and performing the throttle relearn procedure, clear the code and take a test drive. If the code returns within a few days, the throttle body motor or blade is mechanically failing and replacement is needed.
