P2101
Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
P2101 means the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Motor Circuit Range/Performance fault has been detected. The electronic throttle body has a motor that opens and closes the throttle plate. The PCM compares the commanded throttle position to the actual throttle position. When there is a significant difference between the two, P2101 is set. Symptoms include the engine going into limp mode, reduced power, stalling, or the accelerator pedal becoming unresponsive.
Affected Models
- Common in Chevrolet Cobalt, Malibu, and Impala
- Common in GM Silverado, Sierra, and Tahoe with drive-by-wire
- Common in Pontiac G6 and Solstice
- Seen in Saturn Ion and Vue
Common Causes
- Faulty electronic throttle body — motor worn or contaminated preventing proper movement
- Carbon buildup on the throttle plate causing the motor to struggle or bind
- Damaged wiring or connector to the throttle body motor
- Throttle position sensor (TPS) fault inside the throttle body giving incorrect position feedback
- PCM fault — output driver failure for the throttle actuator circuit
How to Fix It
-
Do not drive the vehicle aggressively with P2101 active. The engine may be in limp mode limiting speed to 20 to 30 mph.
Limp mode is a safety feature. The PCM limits throttle to prevent engine damage while the fault exists.
-
Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body and inspect the throttle plate and bore for carbon buildup.
Heavy carbon deposits on the throttle plate are a very common cause of P2101 on GM vehicles.
-
Clean the throttle body using throttle body cleaner spray. Move the throttle plate by hand to clean all surfaces.
Use only throttle body cleaner — not carburetor cleaner, which can damage the throttle bore coating.
-
After cleaning, perform a throttle body relearn procedure as required by your vehicle. On most GM vehicles, cycle the key on and off without starting.
GM throttle bodies require a relearn after cleaning. Without it, the PCM may not recognize the new resting position.
-
If cleaning does not resolve the code, test the throttle body wiring and replace the throttle body assembly if the motor or TPS is faulty.
On most GM vehicles, the throttle body is replaced as a complete unit — the motor and TPS are not sold separately.
When to Call a Professional
Throttle body cleaning costs $50 to $100 at a shop. Throttle body replacement is $100 to $350 in parts plus 1 hour labor. Total repair at a shop is typically $150 to $450. Never lubricate the throttle body plate — only use approved throttle body cleaner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is P2101 dangerous?
Yes — a throttle that does not respond correctly to the accelerator pedal is a safety hazard. In limp mode the vehicle is severely limited but controllable. Do not attempt to drive at highway speeds with P2101 active. Get it repaired promptly.
Will cleaning the throttle body fix P2101?
It often does, especially on GM vehicles. A dirty throttle body causes the motor to work harder and may exceed its performance limits. Cleaning is always the first step — it is cheap and quick, and works in many cases.
What is drive-by-wire and why does it cause these issues?
Drive-by-wire replaces the old mechanical throttle cable with an electronic system. The accelerator pedal sends an electronic signal to the PCM, which commands the throttle body motor. This allows better fuel economy and emissions control. The downside is that if the electronic components wear or get dirty, codes like P2101 can result.
