P2008

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

P2008 means the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) circuit is open on Bank 1. Unlike P2004/P2006 (performance codes), P2008 is specifically an electrical/circuit fault. The PCM detected an open circuit in the wiring that controls the Bank 1 IMRC actuator. This means the PCM cannot send commands to open or close the intake runner flaps on Bank 1. Symptoms include rough idle, reduced power, and check engine light.

Affected Models

  • Common in Ford F-150, Explorer, and Mustang
  • Common in Ford Escape and Fusion with 2.5L and 3.0L engines
  • Common in Mazda 3 and 6 with shared Ford platform
  • Seen in Lincoln MKZ and MKX

Common Causes

  • Broken wire or open circuit in the IMRC actuator wiring harness — most common cause
  • Corroded or damaged IMRC actuator connector causing loss of electrical contact
  • Faulty IMRC actuator with open-circuit internal winding or motor
  • Blown fuse in the IMRC circuit — less common but the first thing to check
  • PCM output driver failure preventing the control signal from reaching the actuator

How to Fix It

  1. Check all fuses related to the intake manifold or engine management in the under-hood fuse box.

A blown IMRC fuse is rare but is the cheapest and quickest thing to check first.

  2. Locate the IMRC actuator connector on the intake manifold. Inspect it for corrosion, broken pins, or loose fit.

Ford IMRC connectors are exposed to heat and moisture — connector failure is a common cause of circuit open codes.

  3. Test the IMRC actuator resistance at the connector with a multimeter. Typical resistance is 6 to 20 ohms — consult factory specs.

Infinite (OL) resistance reading confirms an open circuit inside the actuator or in the wiring.

  4. Trace the wiring harness from the IMRC connector to the PCM, looking for chafed insulation or broken wires.

Ford IMRC wiring can chafe against engine brackets — inspect the entire harness length.

  5. Replace the IMRC actuator if it reads open circuit, or repair the wiring if a break is found in the harness.

If wiring and actuator are both good, the PCM output driver may have failed — professional diagnosis is needed.

When to Call a Professional

IMRC actuator connector and wiring repair is $50 to $150 depending on damage. IMRC actuator replacement is $30 to $100 in parts. PCM replacement (worst case) is $150 to $400 for Ford vehicles. Always check the wiring and connector before replacing the actuator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between P2008 and P2004?

P2004 and P2006 are performance codes — the flap is stuck in a physical position it should not be in. P2008 is a circuit code — the PCM cannot communicate with the actuator at all due to a wiring or electrical fault. With P2008, the PCM does not know what position the flap is in because the circuit is dead.

Will P2008 cause a noticeable power loss?

Yes, particularly at the RPM range where the IMRC normally transitions. With the actuator circuit open, the runner flaps stay in their default mechanical position. On most vehicles, default is the open position — so idle quality may be slightly rough but top-end power is less affected.

Can I drive with P2008?

Yes for normal driving. The IMRC system optimizes power and efficiency but is not essential for basic engine operation. However, the check engine light will cause a smog test failure. Address the fault when convenient — it is not an urgent safety issue.
