H2O

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The H2O alert means it's time to replace your Whirlpool refrigerator's water filter. This is a maintenance reminder — not a malfunction. Your fridge is still working fine, but the water and ice may not be as clean as they should be.

Affected Models

  • WRF535SWHZ
  • WRS325SDHZ
  • WRB322DMBM
  • WRF767SDHZ
  • Most Whirlpool refrigerators with a built-in water dispenser or ice maker

Common Causes

  • The water filter has reached the end of its recommended 6-month service life
  • The filter change reminder was not reset after the last filter replacement
  • The refrigerator has dispensed a set volume of water, triggering the time-based reminder
  • No filter or an incompatible filter is installed, and the refrigerator detected this
  • The filter bypass plug is installed but the system is still prompting for a filter

How to Fix It

  1. Purchase a replacement water filter compatible with your Whirlpool model.

Common Whirlpool filter part numbers include EveryDrop EDR1RXD1, EDR2RXD1, and EDR3RXD1. Check your owner's manual or the filter itself for the correct number.

  2. Locate the filter — it is usually inside the upper right corner of the refrigerator, or in the base grille at the bottom front.

Twist-style filters: turn counterclockwise to remove. Push-button style: press the button to eject.

  3. Insert the new filter and turn it clockwise (or push until it clicks) to lock it in place.

Make sure it is fully seated — a partially installed filter can leak or reduce water flow.

  4. Dispense about 2 litres (half a gallon) of water from the door dispenser.

This flushes air and loose carbon particles from the new filter. Discard this water.

  5. Reset the filter indicator by pressing and holding the 'Water Filter' or 'Filter Reset' button for 3 seconds.

The indicator light will change from red or orange back to blue or green. The H2O alert will clear.

When to Call a Professional

H2O is a maintenance alert — no technician is ever needed. If H2O does not clear after you install a new filter and reset the indicator, check that you used a genuine Whirlpool-compatible filter. Third-party filters occasionally do not seat correctly or trip the filter detection sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still drink the water from my Whirlpool refrigerator when H2O is showing?

Yes, the water is still dispensed. But an overdue filter is less effective at removing contaminants. Whirlpool recommends replacing the filter every 6 months or after filtering 200 gallons (757 litres). After that point, the filter's ability to remove lead, chlorine, and other particles decreases.

Can I use a generic water filter instead of the Whirlpool brand?

Yes, but use filters certified by NSF International. Look for NSF/ANSI Standard 42 and 53 certifications on the packaging. Uncertified cheap filters may not filter effectively and can occasionally cause leaks if they do not seat correctly.

What happens if I just reset the H2O indicator without replacing the filter?

The alert will clear and the reminder countdown will restart. However, the old filter remains in place and continues to degrade. An expired filter can become a breeding ground for bacteria and provides little filtration benefit. Replace it promptly.
