AF

Whirlpool Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The AF error stands for Airflow Fault. It means the dryer is not getting enough fresh air through the exhaust system. This is a safety warning — restricted airflow causes overheating and is a leading cause of dryer fires.

Affected Models

  • WED5000DW
  • WED8000DW
  • WED9290FW
  • WED4950HW
  • Most Whirlpool dryers with sensor drying

Common Causes

  • The lint screen is clogged and has not been cleaned recently
  • The exhaust duct behind the dryer is packed with lint
  • The flexible vent hose is kinked, crushed, or has too many bends
  • The outside vent cap is blocked by lint, a bird nest, or debris
  • The vent duct run is too long, exceeding the maximum allowed length for the dryer model

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the lint screen before or after every load — this is the number one cause of AF.

If the screen has a waxy coating from dryer sheets, wash it with soap and water and let it dry fully.

  2. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the flexible vent hose.

Replace any kinked or crushed hose. Use a rigid or semi-rigid metal duct instead of the cheap foil accordion style.

  3. Disconnect the vent hose and clean inside the duct with a dryer vent brush kit.

Push the brush all the way through to the outside to clear built-up lint. This should be done at least once a year.

  4. Go outside and check the vent cap on the exterior wall.

Open the flap and remove any lint or debris blocking it. The flap should open and close freely.

  5. Run the dryer on a timed dry cycle for 15 minutes after cleaning.

If airflow is restored, the AF code should not return. If it does, schedule a professional duct inspection.

When to Call a Professional

If you have thoroughly cleaned the entire vent system and the AF error still appears, a technician can use an anemometer to measure actual airflow. The duct layout may need to be redesigned if it has too many bends. This situation is rare but can happen in older homes with long vent runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AF error on a Whirlpool dryer dangerous?

Yes — it should be taken seriously. Blocked airflow is a leading cause of dryer fires. The U.S. Fire Administration reports over 2,900 dryer fires per year, and most are caused by lint buildup. Clear the blockage as soon as possible.

How often should I clean my dryer vent duct?

At minimum, once per year. More often if you do large loads or dry thick items like towels regularly. Signs you need to clean sooner: clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, the dryer feeling very hot to the touch, or a burning smell.

What type of dryer vent hose is best?

Rigid metal duct is the best option — it does not collapse and allows the smoothest airflow. Semi-rigid aluminum is the second best. Avoid the cheap foil accordion hose — it crushes easily and traps lint in the ridges.
