RE

Samsung Dishwasher

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The RE error on a Samsung dishwasher means there's a problem with the rinse aid dispenser or its sensor. Rinse aid helps water sheet off dishes for spot-free drying. RE can mean the rinse aid reservoir is empty, the dispenser is jammed, or the sensor that monitors rinse aid level has failed. In most cases, simply refilling the rinse aid and running a reset clears the error immediately.

Affected Models

  • DW80R9950UG
  • DW80R5061US
  • DW80K5050US
  • DW80T5550US
  • Most Samsung dishwashers with rinse aid dispenser

Common Causes

  • Rinse aid reservoir is empty and needs to be refilled
  • Rinse aid dispenser door is jammed closed and won't open to release rinse aid during the cycle
  • Rinse aid level sensor is fouled with hardened rinse aid residue, giving incorrect readings
  • Wrong type of product used in the rinse aid reservoir — thick dish soap or other liquids clog the sensor
  • Rinse aid dispenser solenoid or actuator has failed mechanically

How to Fix It

  1. Check the rinse aid level. Open the dishwasher door and locate the rinse aid cap on the inner door panel — it's usually a round cap with a funnel icon. Open it and look inside. If the reservoir is empty or very low, refill it with dishwasher rinse aid.

Use only dishwasher-specific rinse aid — brands like Finish, Cascade, or store-brand dishwasher rinse aid. Never use dish soap or hand soap in this compartment.

  2. Refill the reservoir slowly, stopping when the indicator shows full. Most Samsung dishwashers have a small window or indicator dot near the cap that shows the fill level. Don't overfill — rinse aid that overflows into the dishwasher can cause excess sudsing.

Wipe up any spilled rinse aid immediately with a damp cloth. Rinse aid residue can cause streaks on glassware.

  3. Inspect the dispenser door. With the dishwasher door open and the machine powered off, find the small rinse aid dispenser door (a spring-loaded flap near the detergent cup). It should open and close freely when you push it gently. If it's stuck or stiff, clean around it with a warm damp cloth to dissolve any hardened residue.

Hardened rinse aid around the dispenser door is a common cause of it sticking. A few minutes of cleaning usually frees it.

  4. Run a short cycle (Express or Quick Wash) after refilling. This lets the dishwasher distribute the fresh rinse aid and update the level sensor reading. After the cycle, check if RE has cleared from the display.

Some Samsung models clear RE only after completing a full wash cycle, not just a quick rinse.

  5. If RE persists after refilling and cleaning, the rinse aid sensor may be coated with dried product residue. Clean inside the dispenser compartment with warm water and a small brush. If RE still won't clear and the dispenser looks clean and properly filled, the sensor or dispenser solenoid may have failed and needs replacement.

A dispenser assembly that won't open during a cycle will leave residue buildup on glasses and dishes (white film or water spots), even if RE isn't showing. These symptoms together confirm a dispenser failure.

When to Call a Professional

RE is usually resolved by refilling rinse aid and cleaning the dispenser — no technician needed. If the dispenser door is mechanically stuck or the solenoid has failed, a technician can replace the dispenser assembly. Expect $80-$150 for dispenser replacement including parts and labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need rinse aid or is it optional?

Rinse aid is optional but highly recommended. Without it, water tends to bead up on dishes and glasses and dry as water spots or a white film. With rinse aid, water sheets off cleanly and dishes come out sparkling. If you have hard water, rinse aid makes an especially noticeable difference. Some newer dishwashers with special drying systems can get acceptable results without it, but rinse aid always improves the outcome.

How long does a rinse aid fill last?

It depends on how often you run the dishwasher and your rinse aid dose setting. At a moderate setting (3-4 on most Samsung models), a full reservoir typically lasts 3-6 weeks for daily users. You can reduce the dose setting to make it last longer, or increase it if you have very hard water. A very low dose setting can also cause the RE warning to appear more frequently.

Can I use white vinegar instead of rinse aid?

White vinegar works as a mild rinse aid substitute and is a popular DIY option. However, Samsung and other manufacturers generally don't recommend it — vinegar is acidic and can degrade rubber gaskets and seals over time. For occasional use it's fine, but if you want to protect your dishwasher long-term, use proper rinse aid. Tablet detergents that include rinse aid (all-in-one tabs) are another alternative.
