uL

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The uL error means your LG washer detected an unbalanced load. The laundry has shifted to one side of the drum. The machine pauses spinning to protect itself from damage.

Affected Models

  • WM3900HWA
  • WM4000HWA
  • WT7300CW
  • Most LG front-load and top-load washers

Common Causes

  • Heavy items like towels or jeans bunched on one side of the drum
  • Washing a single heavy item with no other laundry to balance it
  • Washer not sitting level on the floor
  • Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods
  • Overloaded drum — too many items packed too tightly

How to Fix It

  1. Pause or stop the cycle using the Start/Pause button.

Wait for the door to unlock before opening.

  2. Open the door and redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum.

Spread items out so the weight is balanced around the drum — not piled on one side.

  3. If washing one heavy item (like a blanket), add 2–3 towels to balance the load.

This gives the drum a more even weight distribution.

  4. Close the door and restart the cycle.

The washer will re-attempt the spin. The uL error should not return.

  5. Check that the washer is sitting level on the floor.

Use a spirit level on top. Adjust the feet by turning them clockwise or counterclockwise.

When to Call a Professional

If uL appears repeatedly even with balanced loads — the suspension system may be worn. Shock absorber or suspension rod replacement costs $100–$250. Contact LG support or a certified appliance technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between uL and UE on an LG washer?

They mean the same thing — an unbalanced load. Some LG models show UE while others show uL. Both are resolved the same way: redistribute the laundry.

Why does my LG washer keep showing uL on every spin cycle?

It likely means the machine is not level. Or the suspension system (shock absorbers) is wearing out. Level the machine first. If it keeps happening, call a technician.

Can I prevent the uL error from happening?

Yes. Avoid washing single heavy items alone. Mix heavy and light items together for a balanced load. Do not overfill the drum — leave room for items to tumble freely.
