DE

LG Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The DE error means your LG dishwasher detected that the door isn't properly closed and latched. The dishwasher will not run with the door open — this is a safety feature to prevent water spraying out. DE can appear because the door isn't pushed all the way shut, the latch mechanism is worn, or the door switch isn't signaling the control board correctly. Most DE errors can be resolved without a technician.

Affected Models

  • LDF5545ST
  • LDT5678SS
  • LDFN4542S
  • LDT7808SS
  • LDP6810SS
  • Most LG built-in dishwashers

Common Causes

  • Door not pushed firmly shut — the latch requires deliberate pressure to fully engage
  • Dish rack loaded incorrectly with items sticking out and blocking the door from closing flush
  • Worn door latch mechanism that no longer holds the door securely against the tub
  • Failed door switch (microswitch) inside the latch that doesn't signal 'closed' to the control board
  • Dishwasher not level, causing the door to hang at an angle and not seat evenly in the frame

How to Fix It

  1. Open the door and check the dish racks. Make sure no plates, utensils, or tall items are sticking out past the edge of the rack and blocking the door from closing. Rearrange anything that might be in the way and try firmly closing the door again.

Even a single misplaced spatula handle sticking out 2 inches can prevent the door from latching.

  2. Push the door closed with firm, even pressure across the full door face. LG dishwashers require a deliberate push — not just a gentle nudge. You should hear and feel a positive click when the latch engages. If the click is weak or absent, the latch is suspect.

Try pushing at different spots — center, left edge, right edge — to feel whether any spot isn't seating properly.

  3. Check whether the dishwasher is level. Place a spirit level on the top edge of the open door opening. If it's tilted more than about 1 degree in any direction, adjust the front leveling feet. Uneven dishwashers cause door alignment problems.

Leveling feet are under the front of the machine — usually adjustable with a wrench or pliers. Raise a low corner by turning the foot counter-clockwise.

  4. Inspect the door latch on the top of the door and the strike plate on the top of the tub. Look for any cracks in the plastic latch, or check if the strike plate has shifted or bent. A slightly bent strike plate can be carefully bent back with pliers.

The LG door latch is on the top edge of the door panel. It hooks into a slot on the top of the dishwasher frame.

  5. If the door clicks shut firmly but DE still shows, the door microswitch has failed. The switch is inside the latch assembly. Replacing the entire latch assembly as a unit is usually easier and more reliable than replacing just the switch. Order by model number.

After replacing the latch, always run a complete test cycle to confirm DE doesn't return before reassembling any trim panels.

When to Call a Professional

If the door closes firmly but DE persists, the door switch or latch assembly needs replacement. LG door latch assemblies typically cost $30-$70 for the part. A technician charges $100-$200 total. This is also a manageable DIY repair if you're comfortable opening the door panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does DE appear on a brand-new LG dishwasher?

On a new installation, DE usually means the dishwasher isn't level or the door latch isn't fully seating. During shipping and installation, parts can shift slightly. Check leveling first, then make sure the counter bracket (the small L-bracket that secures the top of the dishwasher to the underside of the counter) isn't pulling the machine forward and away from the door frame.

The door feels closed and I heard a click — why is DE still showing?

A click doesn't always mean a full latch. The latch has two stages on some models — a soft click and a firm engagement. Also, if the door switch has failed, the board never receives the 'closed' signal even though the door is physically latched. Test by pressing the door firmly inward while pressing Start — if it starts briefly, the switch is the issue.

Can a warped door cause DE permanently?

Yes, on older dishwashers the door panel can warp from repeated heat exposure. A warped door won't sit flush against the tub, preventing proper latching. This usually appears as a visible gap along the bottom or side of the door. Warped doors typically require door panel replacement, which may not be cost-effective on an older machine.
